Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi is ready to virtually flag off two Vande Bharat trains between Srinagar and Katra on June 6, 2025, marking the completion of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Line (USBRL). This will finally link the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country by rail line. This project was started 42 years ago. Work on the last 111 km long Katra-Banihal section of the 272 km long Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramula Railway Line (USBRL) was completed in January.
USBRL (Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Line) Project
PM Modi to inaugurate the newly completed 111-km Katra-Banihal section, the final link in the 272-km USBRL. The project began in 1983 and later it was declared as a national project in 2002. The project includes world’s highest railway bridge over the Chenab River, the first cable-stayed railway bridge in India—the Anji Khad Bridge—and Tunnel T-50, approx 13 kilometers long tunnel by Indian railways.

The total estimated cost of the USBRL project is over Rs.43,000 crore, in which around Rs.35,000 crore invested in the Katra-Banihal stretch alone. Local train services are already up and running including the Sangaldan–Baramulla section in Kashmir and Udhampur–Katra in Jammu. The new section between Katra and Sangaldan is now completed and redy to be used for public transport.
Srinagar – Katra Vande Bharat Train
The new Vande Bharat trains will run between Srinagar and Katra stations. Due to the ongoing construction work at the Jammu Railway Yard, the trains will not directly connect to Jammu till mid August or September. Indian Railway officials says this is due to pending maintenance work in railways.

Katra–Srinagar route in expected to get two new Vande Bharat Express Trains for up and down ways. Prime Minister will not be physically present in Srinagar for the inauguration, instead he will flag off the trains virtually ahead of the first anniversary of its third term in PM office on June 9.
Another good news is that, Indian Railways has setup a new Jammu Division headquarter office at Jammu Tawi. This is the 70th division of the national railway network and assumes control of several sections previously managed by the Firozpur Division.
